Target Grades & Courses
SolarVu lessons are suitable for use with renewable energy curriculum for high school grades. Science courses will emphasize calculations and system performance. Social geography and environmental studies will use a more empirical approach. No software is required to access the online content and live SolarVu WebLab. However, students benefit most if they can use a browser on an internet connected PC. Exercises require the ability to navigate a website, read graphs and do basic algebra. Some background with basic electricity is useful.

Learning Objectives
As part of a renewable energy curriculum, SolarVu will give students a good understanding of how real solar PV systems work. Using solar maps they can determine how suitable their location is compared to other parts of the world. Through the live WebLab analysis, students will see for themselves that this is an effective way to generate power. The importance of sustainable energy sources to our modern economy is explained. New terms that are frequently heard in the media such as carbon footprint, GHG, FIT, smart grid are introduced in context. Students considering university studies or a career in this field will find this content particularly interesting.

Teaching Aids
For classroom presentations with a projector, the SolarVu PDF lessons can be downloaded and displayed directly. If the projector PC is connected to the internet, the class can explore the live SolarVu energy portal together prior to students doing WebLab on their own. SolarVu can be used as a self contained teaching unit. Teachers that wish to create their own presentations, can supplement their curriculum with individual SolarVu images available from the Graphics link below. Click the SolarVu video menu link to play a video explaining what the SolarVu energy portal does. SolarVu content is copyright by Cachelan. It is provided for use by licenced schools.

REVIEW Answers
Students should download and print the REVIEW quiz to record their answers directly on the page. The student name used to login with timestamp is automatically printed on their page. Answers to all questions can be found in the lesson content. Students would only be expected to provide some of the points in the free form questions to get a full mark. Click the Print link to download and print the teacher's copy of the answers.

SolarVu WebLab - Answers
Understanding how a real solar PV system performs is enhanced using the hands on SolarVu WebLab. The instructor should provide the students with the web address of the SolarVu energy portal that is monitoring the solar PV system of their school. Students navigate links, using their skills in reading graphs and gauges to record actual values, then analyze results using the theory previously covered. This may be the first exposure students experience in the growing application of smart grid technology using Web 3.0 "the internet of things". Although each student's results will be different because this is a live system, the completed WebLab (Print link) shows typical values for a 10kW system. Marks will be based on the care taken to find the data and how thoughtfully the student has interpreted what it means.

WEBLAB Link Navigator
Live online information delivered to a remote PC will be encountered more frequently as the Smart Grid develops. SolarVu gives students practice in navigating such an interface to answer questions about a complex system. Each SolarVu screen has a HELP button explaining all the items on the screen. If a student is unable to find data for a question, use the Link Navigator (Print link) as a reference guide to give them help. To encourage students to explore on their own, this copy should not be made available to them directly.

Questions & Feeback
Commercial solar PV is a rapidly evolving field. Many teachers will be learning at the same time as their students. Specific questions about the system, how to navigate the interface or any additional comments can be sent to Cachelan for a response. You can customize the slideshow for your school showing photos of the installation or student projects using the built in WebFilm CMS system. Contact us if the site SETUP password provided at installation is no longer available to you. Rapid changes in technology and commercial deployment in the renewable energy industry means the curriculum is continuously evolving. Your feedback and suggestions are welcome on what else you need to deliver this subject to your students.
